SEO is much easier than people think.
There are a lot of people in the industry who will try and make you think it’s difficult but it doesn’t have to be.
The problem most people have is that they start learning about seo and find that there are so many things you ‘could’ do that they don’t know where to start, or they can’t decide which methods to use.
In reality doing well in the search engines is simple and only depends on 2 things – your content and the links to your web page.
Even if you mess up the content, you can still do well with effective link building, so I suggest that’s where you start looking.
Again, there are hundreds of ways to get links to your site, so just pick a few and focus on them.
The easiest way to get started is to write relevant articles that contain your keyword and submit them to services like http://www.isnare.com where they will spread your articles to hundreds of sites.
In the right niche, you can do well just by doing this one strategy.
Press releases also help, but many people seem intimidated by them for some reason, they’re easy and using sites like PRweb.com you can quickly and easily get your press release on hundreds of sites.
Then there’s directory submissions, which again can be outsourced or done with tools. (all 3 of these methods can be automated but I don’t want to put links to tools in case that is against Yahoos terms, but you can find them on Google easily).
Just don’t be intimidated by all the information out there, and track your efforts so that you know what’s working.
Also, you don’t control the search engines, so don’t expect quick results – you may get them, but if not that doesn’t mean you’re not doing the right thing, so stick to what I’ve said and you should do well in any niche.

The websites refereced below, like seobook.com, seomoz.com and sphinn.com are great sources for keeping up-to-date. Keep current. It’s very important in this industry. To learn the basics you can also reference highrankings.com. I have been in the industry myself for over 10 years and in my experience no single website or tool can tell you everything you need to know. The reason is that the search engines don’t really come right out and tell you exactly what you need to do to get high rankings. Some provide tips and suggestions, but to expose exactly what needs to be done would work against the search engine themselves. SEO is both a science and art and takes trial and error – continual testing. It’s important to understand the basics and best practices. Don’t do anything that you yourself know is not ethical. By optimizing your own websites over time you will learn and become a successful SEO expert.
