Most dog owners worry about training their dog properly. In teaching your dog, there are two different ways to train it. Punishment and positive training are the two ways in which you can train your pet. Punishment may or may not work in some cases since most dogs respond negatively to it. Positive training however, has proven that there is more to it than just simply hitting your dog with a rolled up news paper.

Pet owners, especially relatively new ones seem to make the mistake of rewarding bad behavior. An example of this is when you’re teaching your dog and you play a game of fetch and it brings something else – you know it’s not the stick you threw and because you appreciate its effort you pet it. This simple act of mercy by sparing your pet from a reprimand can have dire consequences. If you encourage it that way, the next time you tell your dog to fetch, it will always come back with the wrong object.

Dogs need constant praise at the right times during teaching sessions to make sure you engrain the right type of behavior for it. If your dog successfully carries out a command, praise it as hard as you can – it must internalize in its head that doing the right things can yield very satisfactory results. If you reward your pets in the appropriate setting, you might see a drastic improvement during training.

Dogs may occasionally get your lessons wrong when you try to teach them, but that doesn’t mean you have to punish them physically. Dogs’ maybe intelligent mammals, but it takes them a considerable amount of thinking to understand why you smacked them over the head with a rolled up magazine. It is better to ignore their presence when they misbehave rather than punish them repeatedly the wrong way.

Positive training can teach your dog to act and behave properly without punishing it. This encourages your pet to be more confident about it and at the same time foster a connection between you as its owner and it as your faithful companion.
